Prologue
Prologue
Every autumn, as the last crops came in, the villagers lit the lamps of the Harvest Festival. On its opening day, everyone gathered in the square to hear the lord's address. Hooves struck the rain-filled ruts, and Lord Edric rode into the rare bustle of celebration with his wife Elora beside him, her face hidden behind a black veil. Older villagers whispered at the edge of the square about the fire eighteen years before. The former lord, Alaric, had died while suppressing bandits, and his widow Elora had later married his younger brother Edric.
The whispers passed quickly from mouth to mouth, then stopped when Edric stepped down from his carriage and raised a formal writ of accusation.
"I have received several accounts that a witch in league with the Devil hides among my good subjects. As of today, Mora, the herbalist who lives in the cottage, will be investigated for witchcraft. If she is innocent, the truth will clear her name. If not, she will face the judgment she deserves!"
"No! Mora is not a witch!"
A gray-haired village woman who had been watching the procession turned pale and shook her head. Pippin, the boy who had been tumbling playfully around Mora, pushed through the crowd. Mora held him back before the soldiers could reach him. She had treated feverish children and tended the injured with care, yet whenever misfortune visited the village, malicious rumors followed her. Edric waited for the commotion to subside before continuing.
"The charge will be investigated in full, and Mora will stand trial before the Harvest Festival ends. Until a judgment is reached, enjoy the celebration."
Edric led his soldiers toward Mora's cottage. Close behind walked Cedric, the knight who had guarded Alaric and retained his post when Edric became lord. Soldiers took position at the cottage door while curious villagers lingered nearby. Among them was Bran, a bounty hunter newly arrived in the village.
In time, the opening toast began. A great brazier burned in the square, its smoke rising through the damp scent left by the previous day's rain. Rowan, a wandering knight who had stepped out of the inn, shook the water from his cloak and joined the crowd. Edric suspended the interrogation and opened the ceremony. Mead filled every cup, and fragrant liquor shone in the ceremonial golden goblet. As the tedious address drew to a close, Edric raised the cup to his lips, staggered, and fell. Garik, the tanner who had been leaning against his workshop door, rushed over with the startled soldiers. Cedric checked the lord's pulse, then slowly rose.
"Silence! Lord Edric is dead. This matter will be investigated, and the culprit will be found. No one is to move."
The entire village had gathered in the square, but suspicion soon settled on seven people: Elora, who had stood beside Edric; Rowan, the wandering knight who arrived that day; Bran, the bounty hunter with his rain-spattered ledger; Garik, the tanner whose whereabouts had been unclear; Pippin, the jester who had roamed the festival grounds before the toast; Mora, the herbalist already accused of witchcraft; and Cedric, Edric's own guard knight. Each carried grounds for suspicion, and each guarded a secret. From embers left smoldering eighteen years ago, new smoke began to rise.

CAST
Characters
Meet the seven witnesses left standing in the harvest square.
01
Lady of the Manor
Elora
Lord Edric's wife and the widow of his elder brother, the late Lord Alaric. After Alaric's death, the family arranged her marriage to Edric. Quiet and reserved, she always keeps her face hidden behind a black veil.
Elora rarely attends festivals, but she has come to the village to take part in the interrogation and trial.
She and Alaric were known to be deeply devoted to one another. Villagers whisper that she wears the black veil to mourn her first husband.
02
Wandering Knight
Rowan
A young wandering knight from a distant land. He carries an old sword, is well versed in history and courtly etiquette, and has been asking questions about the fire eighteen years ago.
The knight who raised Rowan educated him in history, etiquette, and the lineages of noble houses. Despite his wandering life, his manners are impeccable.
He claims to have reached the village by chance and decided to observe the trial. Villagers say he has been questioning them about the fire eighteen years ago.
03
Bounty Hunter
Bran
A bounty hunter who specializes in royal commissions. A case ledger and several pairs of shackles clink inside his coat. He is notorious for valuing a reward more than truth or justice.
Bran folds the corners of pages in his ledger that concern unsolved cases. One such page records the fire that struck this village eighteen years ago.
The villagers grumbled that Bran would arrest anyone for the reward, no matter who it was.
04
Tanner
Garik
A tanner working in the outskirts of the village. He mainly deals with leather, dyes, and strong chemicals. Since the arrival of the lord's procession, he has grown noticeably quiet.
He has little contact with the villagers. Apart from his occasional trips to the market for supplies, few people ever see him.
There is a long scar on his palm. When asked about the scar, he only says he got injured in an accident while working.
05
Guard Knight
Cedric
The guard knight of the dead Lord Edric. He has served the noble house since Alaric's coronation and now works as the bodyguard of Edric. He has a meticulous nature and always keeps his armor and gauntlets in order.
Cedric was granted the title of knight during Alaric's coronation and has remained in the same noble house ever since.
Today, Cedric continued to guard Edric by moving between the cottage, the carriage, and the square. The servants testified that he was as strict as usual in his duties.
06
Jester
Pippin
A young jester who roams the village square, earning a living through pranks, comic antics, and short plays.
Raised from a young age in the herbalist Mora's hut, he seems to regard Mora as his only family.
He has the habit of stealing undergarments hung on washing lines or discarded documents from trash bins, which has not earned him a good reputation among the townsfolk.
07
Herbalist
Mora
A herbalist who resides in a cabin near the village. She has treated sick children, but has been accused of being a witch as the famine and fever have worsened.
Edric intended to interrogate Mora on witchcraft charges and bring her to trial today. Some villagers have already begun to treat her as a witch and keep their distance.
Mora remained in her cabin until the interrogation was over. She reappeared in the square only after the interrogation had ended.
